Admissions

Thank you for your interest in the Department of History at New York University.

Applying to the College of Arts and Science as an Undergraduate

Students interested in pursuing a Major or Minor in History at New York University should apply to the College of Arts and Science. Please visit http://admissions.nyu.edu/ for information on applying. Information on the CAS webpage (http://cas.nyu.edu/page/ugHome) and the History Undergraduate webpage (http://history.fas.nyu.edu/page/undergrad) will also be of interest to prospective history students.

Applying to Graduate Programs in History

Our website contains descriptions for each of our MA or PhD programs, faculty profiles and contact information, profiles of current graduate students and alumni, recent and current course schedules, and MA and PhD program handbooks.

You will find information on how to apply to our graduate programs in two places. The first is right here, where you will find general information about deadlines, where to apply, what to include in your application, and how to check your application status. The second is the Admissions section of the Graduate School website. For information about the application process such as using the online application; submitting supporting materials such as the GRE or TOEFL, transcripts, and letters of recommendation; applying as an international student; or preparing your application, please first visit the Graduate School's helpful Application Resource Center at http://gsas.nyu.edu/page/grad.admissionsapplication. If your question is not answered through the Application Resource Center, contact Graduate Enrollment Services at gsas.admissions@nyu.edu.

Please be advised that applications are accepted for the Fall only.  The 2009 Application is available from the GSAS website: http://gsas.nyu.edu/object/grad.admissions.onlineapp.

If you experience any problems with using the online application, email gsas.admissions@nyu.edu with a clear message describing the problem.

Where to Apply

You can apply to the Graduate School of Arts and Science online. Applying online allows you to submit most of your application materials via the internet, pay your application fee by credit card, and use online letters of recommendation. The Graduate School prefers that applicants file applications online.

Application Status

Q: Did you receive my application?

A: Applications are received and processed through the Graduate School of Arts and Science (GSAS), not through the Department of History, hence we are unable to confirm receipt of an online or paper application or supplementary application materials here in the Department. If you have submitted your application, you may check which application materials the Graduate School has received on your behalf by visiting the GSAS Supporting Materials Tracking System (SMTS) on the GSAS web site. Please rest assured that if application materials have been received by the Graduate School as indicated on SMTS, we will receive them here in the Department in due course.

Visit the following link for information on linking to and using SMTS: SMTS information.

Notification

Q: When will I know my admissions decision?

A: For all applicants, admission decision letters are mailed by the Graduate School of Arts and Science and not by the Department of History. If you applied to our doctoral program, you can expect to receive your decision letter via mail by mid- to late March. If you applied to one of our Master’s or Certificate programs, you can expect to receive your decision letter via mail by early to mid-April.

It is the policy of the Graduate School that admission decisions may not be sent by e-mail or fax, or reported by telephone. If you need to update or correct the address (mailing, permanent or email) listed on your application, please go to the address corrections and updates page on the web at http://gsas.nyu.edu/object/grad.admissions.aacu.

If you applied to our doctoral program and have not received an admissions decision by early April, it would be appropriate to contact us to inquire about the status of your application. Inquiries can be directed to history.dept@nyu.edu. Please wait until early April to make inquiry.
