The Graduate School of Arts
and Science has announced their deadline for the GSAS Spring Awards, including
the GSAS Summer Pre-doctoral Fellowships. The competition is open to graduate
students in all departments in the College, including History graduate
students.
There is a detailed
explanation of the awards available last year at the following site:
http://gsas.nyu.edu/page/grad.life.fellowships.html (Scroll down to the bottom
of the page and click on the link for “GSAS Spring
Awards, including the GSAS Summer Pre-doctoral Fellowships”
to open a PDF document outlining the awards descriptions and application
instructions from last year’s awards.)
Please note that the
applications are due to GSAS on February 11, 2009. This is the date by which
the Department must submit all applications and supporting documentation to the
Graduate School of Arts and Science. In order for the Department to internally
review all applications, the internal departmental deadline for all students to
turn in application materials to Jessica Corey is: MONDAY, JANUARY 26, BY 10:00
AM EST. Applications and all supporting documentation MUST be received BOTH
ELECTRONICALLY IN WORD FORMAT AS EMAIL ATTACHMENTS to jessica.corey@nyu.edu and

your application to be considered by the Department. Please take advanced note
of this deadline; late applications cannot be considered.
The GSAS website contains
information about last year's awards competition. We urge you to review the
information posted there in detail as it is likely to be very similar to the
updated information that will later be posted regarding the Spring 2009
Competition for Award Year 2009-2010. Please use last year's information as a
model to begin considering and preparing the following aspects of your
application: application cover page; budget narrative (for some awards); your
CV; outline; project description; schedule (for some awards); dissertation
abstract (for some awards); project summary (for some awards); teaching
statement, teaching evaluations, and unsolicited student testimonials (for some
awards); 2 letters of reference; and New York University official transcript.
Please refer to the guide
posted on the GSAS website for which materials are necessary for each award. In
order to prepare the strongest applications possible, please discuss your
written proposals with your faculty advisors and use the remainder of the fall
semester and the Thanksgiving and Winter breaks to pull together all the
relevant information you will need to draft a strong proposal. Information on
all the components of the applications is available at the above link.
It is in your best interest
to begin working on your applications early. Please refer to the GSAS website (http://gsas.nyu.edu/page/grad.life.fellowships.html) to monitor any updates and
announcements from GSAS.
