Spring 2010 Undergraduate Registration

Undergraduate Registration Advisement Frequently Asked Questions:

HOW CAN I BE CLEARED TO REGISTER FOR CLASSES?

Take your printed degree progress report from ALBERT along with your completed registration worksheet to a registration advisor during the registration advising period. The registration advisor will sign off on your Registration Worksheet and place it in the box in the registration advisement office. The worksheet is also obtainable as a hard copy on the credenza outside of the elevators on the 7th floor of the King Juan Carlos Center.

WHAT IF I AM CURRENTLY ABROAD?

History majors currently studying abroad must send a completed registration worksheet to Sadie Paschke (sadie.paschke@nyu.edu).  I will clear you for registration within 2 business days starting November 2nd. Only students that are currently abroad may email their worksheet to me.

CAN I MAKE AN APPOINTMENT TO SEE A REGISTRATION ADVISOR?

Registration advising office hours will be by walk-in only on a first come-first served basis. Because we have so many available hours for registration advising wait time is not an issue.

WHEN IS THE REGISTRATION ADVISING PERIOD?

November 2nd through November 20th, Monday through Friday 9:00-5:00. Advising is in room 401 in the King Juan Carlos Center at 53 Washington Square South.

WHERE IS REGISTRATION ADVISING?

Advising is in room 401 in the King Juan Carlos Center at 53 Washington Square South.

WHAT IS THE POINT OF REGISTRATION ADVISING?

We have you check in during this time every semester because we want to make sure that you are on the right track with your major requirements and to make sure that you understand which requirements you have left to fulfill.

ONCE I HAVE SEEN A REGISTRATION ADVISOR HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE FOR ME TO BE CLEARED TO REGISTER?

It may take up to 2 business days so please plan accordingly. Please note that ALBERT will not allow you to register before the registration date you were given even if you have been cleared by the department. You should be cleared to register before your appointment so that you will be able to register on your appointment date.

I’M A DOUBLE MAJOR AND I WAS CLEARED TO REGISTER BY MY OTHER DEPARTMENT, DO I STILL NEED TO COME IN FOR REGISTRATION ADVISING?

Yes, if you are a double major you can be cleared for registration by either major department but you must still see an advisor in history to make sure you are on track.

WHY DID ALBERT ASSIGN ME MY PARTICULAR REGISTRATION DATE?

ALBERT Registration appointments are assigned according to amount of credits already earned. ALBERT registration appointments begin for seniors on November 16th. The History Department doesn’t’ have any authority to change registration times; if you think there is a problem with your registration date you should see a CAS advisor.

WHY DO WE HAVE TO PRINT A DEGREE PROGRESS REPORT?

The Registration Advisors cannot help you if they don’t know what classes you have taken.

CAN I PRINT OUT A DEGREE PROGRESS REPORT IN THE DEPARTMENT?

Unfortunately we don’t have printers for student use in the building but you may print out your Degree Progress Report in Bobst. If you can’t print out your degree progress report please pull it up before coming in and complete the worksheet with your courses. There is a computer in the registration advising office where you can pull up your DPR so that the registration advisor can check to make sure what you have down is correct.

WHERE CAN I OBTAIN A REGISTRATION WORKSHEET?

The worksheet is obtainable as a hard copy on the credenza outside of the elevators on the 7th floor of the King Juan Carlos Center or here.

HOW DO I FIND OUT WHICH REQUIREMENTS ARE FULFILLED BY THE COURSES I HAVE TAKEN?

You can look at the requirement grid

WHERE CAN I FIND THE SPRING 2010 LIST OF UNDERGRADUATE CLASSES?

It is available on the website here. There are also hard copies available on the credenza just outside of the elevator on the 7th floor of the KJCC.

CAN REGISTRATION ADVISORS ANSWER QUESTIONS ABOUT MY NON-HISTORY COURSES?

No, registration advisors in the History Department can only answer questions about history major requirements. For general degree questions please see your CAS advisor.

I’M A SENIOR. WHAT IF I CAN’T GET INTO A WORKSHOP OR SEMINAR?

Senior History majors have priority for seminars and workshops and all other classes. This process is automatic in the sense that senior history majors are given an earlier registration date and can enroll in these courses before juniors. If you still need a workshop or seminar you should sign up for one as soon as you can before they fill up.

I’M A SOPHOMORE, CAN I TAKE A WORKSHOP?

Only juniors and seniors may take seminars and workshops.

ARE ACCESS CODES REQUIRED FOR ANY CLASSES?

Access codes are required for all Internships and Independent Studies but are not required for most lectures, seminars and workshops. Senior History majors have priority for seminars and workshops and all other classes.

HOW CAN I TAKE AN INDEPENDENT STUDY OR INTERNSHIP?

If you are interested in doing an Independent Study or Internship, there is information on our website along with the required forms and instructions.

I ACCIDENTALLY DROPPED A COURSE AND NOW IT’S FULL. CAN YOU PUT ME BACK IN IT?

You must be extremely careful when adding and dropping courses. The waitlist is automatic which means if you accidentally drop a course I don’t have the ability to put you back in it (nor does the instructor).

A COURSE I AM INTERESTED IN IS FULL WITH A WAITLIST. CAN YOU OR THE INSTRUCTOR PUT ME INTO THE COURSE?

No. This would not be fair to the students on the waitlist who enrolled before you, and neither the instructor nor I have the authority to do so.

I HAVE A QUESTION THAT WAS NOT ANSWERED ABOVE. WHAT SHOULD I DO?

You can either ask the registration advisor at your meeting with him/her or contact Sadie Paschke. Sadie’s office hours are Mon-Thurs 9:30-12:00, 3:00-4:30. Her email address is srp7@nyu.edu.
